September Focus, Book Club, and Challenge

Hey hey! Time to announce our focus, book club, and challenge for the month 🎉 I wanted to choose a book that was not lengthy (because I know we are all busy with school starting and transitions happening!) but that was impactful. I hope you’ll join in because I think this month is going to be an impactful one!

September Focus: Obedience

“Christianity is not about rules, it’s about relationship.” Raise your hand if you’ve heard that statement before. It’s so easy to put grace before rules and forget that God gave us rules for our benefit. It’s easy to misunderstand that God’s rules are not about an angry God trying to keep his rebellious kids in line! The Ten Commandments are words about obeying God and about His holiness. They are meant to be life giving and to point to a God who loves us. This month we are going to focus on how these words are relevant to our lives today and how in delighting in them we will lead to a greater desire for God and to live in obedience to Him.

September Challenge: Memorize the Ten Commandments

September Book Choice: “Ten Words to Live By: Delighting In and Doing What God Commands” by Jen Wilkin

September Bonus: Printable of the ten words to live by

September Challenge

I have a question for you: do you have the Ten Commandments memorized? Did you have them memorized as a child or as a teen? I’m sure at some point of your life you probably heard a Sunday School lesson on them or even a sermon. But what are they really? This month as we read about, and explore, God’s ten words for us to live by, let’s really meditate on them. I want to challenge us to memorize them (if you haven’t already!) in hopes that as we learn more about them they will change the way we view grace and law, rules and relationship, leading us to a deeper desire to delight and do what God tells us to.

September Book Club

This month we are reading “Ten Words to Live By: Delighting In and Doing What God Commands” by Jen Wilkin. In this book we will get the refresher we need on God’s ten words for us (the Ten Commandments) but we will also see how it’s not just about having a set of rules. Grace and the Law were both for our benefit and as Jen unpacks each commandment we’ll see how these ten words are for our good. At the end of each chapter there are verses to reflect on, questions to ponder, and a prayer prompt.

TO DO:

*Purchase your copy of “Ten Words to Live By” and begin reading. This month we are reading at our own pace and trying something different – only one set of discussion questions! Rather than weekly questions we will change to an end of the month set of questions covering the entire book. Let me know how this format works for you!

*Join us on the blog for the monthly discussion questions. Questions will be up on Friday, September 30th.

*Answer questions, comment, tell us what you’re learning, share a favorite quote from the book… it’s up to you! Hope you’ll join in!
