Pointing to the Light

“Chase, look at the lights!”

I find myself saying this each time my son and I are driving in the car at night together. It’s that time of year. Houses are lit up for Christmas. Inflatables and decorations are out on yards. “Whoa!” he says pointing and I can’t help but smile at the wonder that lights inspire in themidst of darkness.

Driving in the car looking at lights and playing Christmas music has always been one of my favorite holiday traditions. There’s just something so cozy about bundling up and seeing all the lights shine, pointingout the fun decorations and twinkling lights. Fingers pointing out the windows, smiles all around, laughter and joy filling the car. It’s one of those things that makes Christmas feel like Christmas to me. It’s been so fun to share thiswith my son and I know it will be one of the traditions we keep going year after year.

I started to think about how we are actually called to point to the Light every day of the year. I think of John the Baptist and how he was “a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.” John 1:6-8  In the Gospel of Matthew, he uses the Old Testament prophecy in Isaiah to describe John as “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” (Matthew3:3)

Like John, we are to bear witness to the Light. We’re simply here to share Jesus! There are so many people driving through the dark nights of their lives needing someone to point out the bright Light of Christ. We can prepare the way for the Lord by telling our own Jesus stories: what has God done in your life? Share that! Be open to questions and try to clear up misconceptions about God.

I think it is so amazing that God uses people to share about His light! Isn’t Christmas a great time to shine bright for Jesus?! Let’s all burn bright and have the courage like John to point others to the Light this Christmas season!

And just for fun here are some challenges to share the Light and have some family fun:
