One of the most powerful experiences I’ve ever gone through in my life was a moment of surrender.

I had miscarried two babies in just over a year’s time. I was raw, bruised to the core and ready to explode. I was trying so hard to hold onto God even though I didn’t understand why He had let me down, not just once, but twice. Every little thing that went wrong, every inconvenience or bad day, felt like another way that He was showing me He was in control and I wasn’t.

I remember this day so vividly – another day where something had gone wrong and I just broke. It wasn’t anything major, definitely not something that should have been the catalyst for this special moment between God and I. But, there in my car, I just cried and let all my hurt feelings out. It was ugly and messy and I’m sure anyone who could see me must have wondered what the heck had happened.

But it was in all of that mess, that I opened my hands in surrender. I felt this physical release even though there wasn’t actually anything in my hands. I felt His peace and I knew that even if my circumstances didn’t change, everything was different.

I wish I could say that was it. That it was the last time I needed to surrender. But of course it wasn’t. Like Laura Story says in “I Give Up,” it’s a continual process, a lifestyle we commit to. That sounds so incredibly difficult but also incredibly freeing! I imagine more and more weight to be lifted off of my shoulders, more and more peace to fill me, and open hands to worship Him more freely. A life of surrender is so difficult, but man it is so worth it.
